A Retailer’s Worst Nightmare

It is called buyer’s remorse, and it used to be my best friend for many years.

Are you familiar with the feeling that slowly turns from euphoria into a queasy sensation of concern, guilt and self-doubt? Do you hear a haunting voice in your head that says “Why did you buy that? You act like a selfish bitch with no consideration for your family. Return your purchases. NOW!” At this you reach a high level of anxiety that doesn’t let you sleep, and makes you toss and turn, and eat yourself alive for spending money on something you don’t need.

The next(…)

A Feminist or a Bitch?

I never thought about feminism as a movement or even as a word till the year I moved to the U.S.

In 2000 a clueless me joined the Women’s Studies program because I won a scholarship. Back then I did not know that Women’s Studies was not the most popular program at the university, and for a good reason. Women’s Studies was a feminist program in a small Mormon town.

I guess you can say that I discovered American feminism at the tender age of 26.

No, I did not become a bra burning feminist. I did not turn into a radical men(…)

My Life Philosophy for Managing Money

Do you have a personal mission statement? How about a financial mission statement?

I have neither of these. I do know, somewhat vaguely, what my life’s journey is supposedly all about. But my financial destination is not clearly defined.

Theoretically my life is a journey to my debt free future, hopefully comfortable and financially secure retirement, and lots and lots of travel. However, this destination does not necessarily give me a sense of order, structure and organization. I am not even sure I am heading into the right direction.

I never had a conversation with myself as to what I want out of(…)

On Women’s Liberation, Manhood and My Wife

Beaker talks about Women’s Liberation movement, what manhood means, and explains why he is okay with me making more money than he does. My story ”Why I Lied About Money” made him want to write this post. This is his point of view…

I truly believe that we are a product of our environment.

I grew up in a generation that was labeled as the generation that didn’t care about anything, that didn’t have a work ethic. We expected everything that we wanted to be given to us. Our generation was lovingly called Generation X.

I grew up learning about Civil Rights, Women’s Liberation,(…)

Love Is Not Transactional. Or is it?

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day, and everyone (well, almost everyone) was talking about expectations of gifts, dinners out, breakfasts in bed, rose petals on the floor, bubbles in the hot tubs and whatnot. Almost everyone expected something as a gift of love, something that would show that he or she cares.

One of my friends requested a Pandora bracelet from her boyfriend. The guy has three jobs and barely lives from paycheck to paycheck. Instead of doing some research, for example, just checking out Red Envelope prices and getting a better and a cheaper version, he went to Pandora store and got the(…)
